The Principal Designer (PD) means the designer appointed to plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase and coordinate matters relating to health and safety during the pre-construction phase to ensure that, so far as is reasonably practicable, the project is carried out without risks to health or safety.
COMMERCIAL PROJECTS:
If the Commercial Client fails to appoint a Principal Designer, the Client MUST fulfil the duties of the Principal Designer.
DOMESTIC PROJECTS:
If the Domestic Client fails to appoint a Principal Designer, the designer in control of the pre-construction phase of the project IS the Principal Designer (e.g. The Architect).
- This product is aimed at Architects, M&E Engineers, Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Landscape Architects or any organisation or individual who are classed as "Designers" for a Construction Project. Designers must apply the "General Principles of Prevention" during the design process and provide the Principal Designer with details of how risks are controlled. This document is in "Word" format and is fully editable.
- Before the construction phase of a project starts, CDM Regs 2015 specifies that Pre Construction Information is made available to all parties. The problem with this is that the information the Designers and the Principal Contractor wants is different. To get over this issue, we have developed a Pre-Design Information Pack Template that can be issued to Designers during the concept stage or very early in the design process. This information can be used to ensure the Designers apply the "General Principals of Prevention" when designing the project.
