The Contractors’ Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) is the foremost authority on UK compliance, risk mitigation and supply chain management.
Getting accredited with CHAS can help your business to safeguard your reputation and grow your business.

This page can assist you and point you in the right direction for document templates to assist your company to become CHAS Accredited.

Depending on which package you have selected with CHAS, some of the sections below might not be applicable.

SECTION:
Health & Safety Policy (and Organisation for Health & Safety)

You will need to upload your signed health and safety policy statement along with all your safety arrangements.

SECTION:
Access to Competent Health and Safety advice

You will need to let CHAS know if you have access to a competent person (internally or externally) that can give you competent health and safety advice. A CV upload and contact details can work here.

If you haven’t got an internal person qualified (NEBOSH Construction, IOSH, etc) then you might need to look at getting a Consultant

SECTION:
Enforcement Actions

You will need to let CHAS know if you have had any Prohibition / Improvement Notice or Prosecutions in relation to health and safety been taken by HSE or Local Authority against you or your company in the last three years.

This is a simple Yes / No answer and if you select “yes”, you will need to provide details and action taken to prevent reoccurrences.

SECTION:
Accident Reporting and Accident Investigation

You will need to upload your arrangements for the recording, investigating and reporting to the authorities of any accidents, incidents, near-misses or dangerous occurrences. Also need to include details of accidents / incidents you have had in the last three years (if you have had any).

SECTION:
Risk Assessment leading to a Safe Method of Work

You will need to upload your arrangements for identifying and controlling risks. Also need to include upload completed examples of risk assessment and / or method statements.

SECTION:
Control of Hazardous Substances

You will need to upload sample copies of COSHH assessments relevant to products used by, or likely to be encountered by your work force. You will also need to provide evidence that employees are briefed with regard to the use of hazardous substances (you could do this by carrying out a tool box talk on some of the substances and control measures).

SECTION:
Work Equipment (PUWER)

You will need to upload your arrangements for managing your work equipment (plant, equipment, vehicles etc).

You will also need to upload evidence of compliance (filled in daily check sheets, PUWER inspections, ladder inspections etc)

SECTION:
Portable Electrical Equipment (PAT)

You will need to upload your arrangements for the maintenance and use of portable electrical equipment.

Even though it doesn’t ask officially, it is also good to upload your up to date PAT testing records for the assessor because they usually come back and ask for them.

SECTION:
Health Surveillance

You will need to upload your arrangements for the assessment and monitoring of work-related health issues.

You will also need to upload evidence that this is been done (e.g. a filled in questionnaire, but the personal details blanked out for data protection compliance)

SECTION:
Manual Handling

You will need to upload your arrangements for manual handling operations and practical evidence of these being implemented (Manual Handling Assessments & Training Certificates).

SECTION:
First Aid

You will need to upload your arrangements for first aid and evidence of these being implemented (e.g. first aid training certificates)

SECTION:
Fire Precautions and Fire Risk Assessment

You will need to upload your arrangements for fire precautions and fire risk assessment and evidence of these being implemented.

Recommend also upload a fire plan showing locations of extinguishers and escape routes, fire risk assessment and some fire safety training certificates.

SECTION:
Working at Height

You will need to upload your arrangements for with regard to work at height and evidence of these being implemented.

Recommend also upload work at height risk assessments, training certificates such as Working at Height, IPAF, PASMA etc. Maybe also include ladder and step ladder inspections etc.

SECTION:
Training and Workforce Competence

You will need to upload your arrangements for achieving a competent workforce and supply practical evidence to support this.

Recommend upload the following: Training Matrix, Training Certificates, Tool Box Talk Briefing Sheets. There are a few sections to complete here, make sure you upload the right information into the right section.

Any missing training can be completed from our online training portal.

SECTION:
Workforce Involvement

You will need to upload your arrangements and practical evidence for consulting with and involving your workforce on health and safety matters.

You will need to upload evidence of workforce involvement (e.g. minutes of safety meetings, documented evidence of discussions, tool box talks briefings etc).

SECTION:
Monitoring, Audit and Review

You will need to upload your arrangements and practical evidence for example site inspections and audit reports etc.

You will need to upload evidence of any safety inspections or audits you have carried out, a consultant has carried out or even reports on work you have carried out for a Main (Principal Contractor), be cheeky and request a copy.

SECTION:
Sub-Contracting / Sub-Consulting

If you use sub-contractors, you will need to upload completed examples of how you assess competence and monitor performance of sub-contractors/consultants including labour-only.

You will need to upload evidence of completed questionnaires you have sent out to sub-contractors/consultants including labour only.

SECTION:
Co-operation and Co-ordination

You will need to upload practical evidence of how you achieve co-operation and Co-ordination for projects, which include arrangements or project team meeting notes.

You will need to upload evidence for example of pre-start meeting minutes, progress meeting minutes, e-mail correspondence etc.

SECTION:
Welfare Provision

You will need to upload you arrangements which ensure appropriate welfare facilities are in place before work starts on site.

CHAS would like to see documents like a site set-up plan, other evidence could be copies of invoices for welfare hire (cabins, portaloos etc).

SECTION:
Control of Asbestos

You will need to upload your arrangements and guidance given to staff should the presence of asbestos be suspected during a project.

You will also need to upload evidence of asbestos awareness training carried out in the last 12 months.

SECTION:
Construction Phase

You will need to upload a recently completed Construction Phase Plan(s) to show that risks are appropriately managed.
